about

This film represents two different sides of the human psyche through the two different sides of the same person - the soldier and the guard. According to the director, the soldier represents our inner strength to keep going regardless of the pain, and the guard represents the laziness and undisciplined side, the one that keeps snoozing the alarm, and his boredom eventually drives him to want to kill himself. Eventually the two sides clash, and one ends up winning. The director has his own opinion regarding the outcome, each member of the compositional team has his or her own, and you may have a completely different view. Regardless, one dies and the other keeps going.

Out of the four films available for this first round of student films, there was only one that I didn’t really like (and in fact, only one student picked it as a third choice, and only because she had to have a third choice, not because she wanted to write for it). This was my first choice, and I was drawn to it because I could see a deeper meaning behind the story it was trying to tell. From the first spotting session and discussions we had as a team, we all had similar ideas of the musical role and approach, and had several long meetings while waiting for our themes to be approved where we more or less laid out all of the musical elements and concepts we planned on using to ensure the score sounded cohesive.

I scored the final showdown between the two, as well as the end credits (using a reimagined version of one of the variations we sent to the director during the process of getting a theme approved, but never used in its original form). Like the rest of the score, it uses piano and various synths. This film features a fully electronic score.
