Cane - Marlin Wakes Up

from PNWFS Demo Reel by David Lee Grossman

/

about

After being in a car accident when he was a boy that killed his mother and left him in leg braces (and subsequently bullied by other children for being a ‘cripple), Marlin isolated himself from human contact as much as possible. Now an old man living alone, he’s still haunted by nightmares of both the crash and bullying, as well as the constant presence of the cane he relies on to walk, a neverending reminder of the fact that he’s not whole.

After being woken by yet another nightmare, he goes about his normal daily routine, reminded even more than normal how tied to the cane his life has become. As he eats breakfast, he turns on the radio and relives the news report (again) of his own accident.

For this project, we were given a specific instrumentation (harp, clarinet, cello, and pre-recorded electronic pads to extend the harp’s sustain) and provided with a rough set of hit points to meet. This film has been used as the first score-to-picture project for a number of years, and each student writes for the same clip.
