Alphabet Soup - Through the Soup​-​Bowl

An animated exercise film that Hummie Mann used when he taught at Columbia University. In this scene, a young girl ends up falling into the alphabet soup she’s eating for lunch (a la Alice in Wonderland). The film eventually becomes rather dark (as hinted at by the darker color palette), but this initial scene is more youthful and energetic.

In this final round of student films, only one film (a gothic horror one) was submitted for scoring, so we had the option of choosing that film or one of two ‘exercise’ films that the program has kept around for students that want a different option or for times when they don’t get enough films. From the beginning of the program, I knew I wanted to have an animated project in my portfolio (even if just to show that I know how to work with animation) so when this came up as an option I had to put it as my first choice.

And yes, the cue title is a little bit of literary humor - when I first saw the girl falling into the soup bowl, the first image that popped into my mind was of another girl falling into a strange and mysterious world through a rabbit hole, although one a little less dark than this (but just as strange).
